The first paper, due Thursday, Feb. 24th, should be approximately four printed pages in length.  Werther, the hero of Goethe's novel of that name, is considered to be the distillation of the "romantic personality."  It is his characteristics that define the movement.  You are asked to write a paper identifying Werther's distinguishing characteristics, his enthusiams, his fears, his intellectual, religious, moral (etc.) ideas.  Conclude your paper by giving your opinion of what you think of such a personality.

The second paper, due Tuesday, Mar. 21st, concerns Mann's novel Buddenbrooks, the chronicle of the decline of a once rich and proud family.  In a paper of approximately six printed pages, describe first the sort of values to which the various members of the family subscribe.  What do they value, what (or what sort of people) do they like and dislike, on what do they place their trust.  Then proceed to analyze why it is that this family, once so solid, falls into decline.
